SANTA IGLESIA CATEDRAL

Situada en pleno centro de Granada y con entrada por la Gran Vía, está considerada como la primera iglesia renacentista de España. Fundada el 21 de mayo de 1492 por voluntad de los Reyes Católicos, fue proyectada en 1505 por los mismos maestros que la Capilla Real, comenzándose las obras en 1518 conforme al modelo gótico de la catedral de Toledo.
La inmensa catedral de Granada marcó desde el segundo tercio del s. XVI el camino ejemplar de todas las nuevas iglesias metropolitanas que tras ella se elevaron.
En 1518 las obras fueron encomendadas al arquitecto Diego de Siloé, que creó la fórmula de adaptación a las dimensiones y plantas anteriores, diseñó una nueva traza del templo, de estilo renacimiento español, concluyéndose en 1704. Diego de Siloé consiguió convencer al reacio Emperador Carlos V de las posibilidades de vivir la espiritualidad cristiana dentro de una arquitectura pagana, heredada de griegos y romanos.
La fachada principal, es una magistral obra barroca trazada por Alonso Cano en 1667, que la organiza en tres espectaculares arcos con casetones que recuerdan los de la capilla mayor e, incluso, los arcos de triunfo romanos. De las dos torres proyectadas por Siloé, solo se inició la construcción de una, quedándose en 57 metros de alto en lugar de los 81 previstos, Fue Felipe II quien, ante los terremotos frecuentes en la zona tan conocidamente sísmica, mandó detener las obras de dicha torre. En la fachada que da a calle Cárcel encontramos dos puertas, destacando la del Perdón, obra escultórica maestra de Siloé.
En cuanto al interior del templo, de estilo renacentista, alzado sobre planta gótica, de cinco naves, destaca la Capilla Mayor, una de las obras más bellas y atrevidas de la arquitectura universal en la que se encuentran las estatuas orantes de los Reyes Católicos. Los muros altos están decorados con vidrieras muy bellas, algunas traídas de Flandes. En la Sacristía, el principal tesoro es un Crucifijo de tamaño natural de Martínez Montañés, y bajo él se guarda una de las más preciadas joyas del arte español: la Inmaculada, pequeña escultura barroca granadina realizada en 1656 por Alonso Cano.
